ROCKS

Rocks are made up of minerals. They form the solid part of the Earth.

We use rocks for many different things:

Minerals are natural, solid substances. We can find them on their own, or combined with other mineral inside rocks.

Minerals are made up of only one substance.

THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD

Children have special rights to protect them. These rights are international; they apply to children under 18 in all countries of the world. Some of these rights are:
  • The right to receive food, water, housing and medical services.

GOVERNMENT AND ELECTIONS


A political party is a group of citizens with similar ideas about how to govern the country. In Spain, there are many political parties. Each party writes an election manifesto. This is a list to explain their ideas to the citizens.

WHERE WE LIVE


We are going to learn about the places where people live.

Most people live together in small villages, big places like towns or very big places like cities.

SPANISH INSTITUTIONS

Spain is a democracy. This means that all citizens are equal and have the same rights and obligations. The rights and obligations are written in the Spanish Constitution. It was approved in 1978 and it is the most important law in Spain.

MUNICIPALITIES


The smallest administrative division in Spain is called a municipality. A municipality consists of one or more cities, towns or villages, governed by a local council.

The head of the local council is the mayor. The mayor and the councilors work in the Town Hall.

AUTONOMOUS COMMUNITIES

In Spain there are seventeen Autonomous Communities. Fifteen are on the Iberian Peninsula. The other two are the archipelagos of the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.

Each Autonomous Community has its own history and traditions. They all have their own capital city and government.

WHERE IS SPAIN?

Spain is a country in south-west Europe. Spanish territory consists of:
  •   Most of the Iberian Peninsula.
  • The Balearic Islands
  • The Canary Islands.
  • The cities of Ceuta and Melilla on the coast of North Africa.
